There’s a synergy between the activities of Thermakraft and Piha Surf Life Saving Club. Our products save homes from water; the club saves people from water.
We’re proud to be a long-standing supporter of Piha Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC), one of the oldest life-saving clubs in New Zealand. Every year our sponsorship helps the club to stay afloat, so that Piha beach is a safer place to swim. Founded in 1934 by a group of players from the Waitemata Rugby Club, Piha SLSC pioneered the use of surf rescue boats and Malibu boards for rescuing swimmers. Thousands of children have gained surf life-saving skills through the club, with many more to come.
“Surf life-saving is an iconic New Zealand institution and the volunteers involved give up huge amounts of their time in summer to help people enjoy the surf safely. By sponsoring the Piha club, we’re helping to keep one of Auckland’s most popular surf beaches safer for swimmers,” says Jay McClennan of Thermakraft.
The financial support provided by Thermakraft assists with every aspect of the club’s activities, from training the most junior ‘tadpoles’ (ages five and six) to ensuring active patrols have all the gear they need to carry out rescues.
“It’s great to have Thermakraft as part of our team at Piha SLSC. Their support helps our senior surf squad athletes compete during the surf season and ultimately become better lifeguards to patrol our beaches,” says Nicky Lloyd, Chairperson of Piha SLSC.
During the 2019/2020 season, Piha SLSC volunteers put in 7,028 hours of time, rescued 27 people, gave first aid to 66 people, helped with 55 searches and carried out 17,000 preventative actions.
